1. Dining Table Sizing
Allow 24 inches of table space per person and 36 inches of clearance around the table for chairs and walking.
- 4 people: 36" x 48" to 40" x 60"
- 6 people: 36" x 72" to 40" x 84"
- 8 people: 40" x 96" to 44" x 108"
- Round tables: 48" (4 people), 60" (6 people), 72" (8-10 people)
2. Coffee Table Sizing
Coffee tables should be 2/3 the length of your sofa and 14-18 inches from the sofa edge. Height should be equal to or 1-2 inches lower than sofa seat height (typically 16-18 inches).
3. Materials & Durability
Wood (Solid): Most durable, timeless, can be refinished. Hardwoods like oak, walnut, and maple last decades.
Engineered Wood/MDF: Budget-friendly, less durable (5-10 years). Good for low-traffic areas.
Glass: Modern aesthetic, easy to clean, shows fingerprints. Tempered glass is safest.
Metal: Industrial look, very durable, can be heavy. Steel and aluminum are popular.
Marble/Stone: Luxurious, unique patterns, requires sealing and maintenance.
4. Table Shapes
- Rectangular: Most common, seats the most people, fits most spaces
- Round: Promotes conversation, no sharp corners (kid-friendly), seats fewer people
- Square: Compact, works in small spaces, limited seating
- Oval: Combines benefits of rectangular and round, elegant look
5. Special Features
Extendable Tables: Leaves expand seating for guests. Butterfly, drop-leaf, and pull-out extensions.
Storage: Drawers, shelves, or hidden compartments add functionality.
Adjustable Height: Coffee tables or desks that convert from sitting to standing height.
6. Budget Guidelines
- Dining Tables: $200-600 (budget), $600-1,500 (mid-range), $1,500+ (high-end)
